Everything here was from my Drawing for Animation Class with Joe Olson, who is awesome.
Medium used is all traditional ink.

This assignment was to take some reference, draw it as front and back, then mess with it to make a character. The character I made was the Fairy Godmother from the Bronx. That's gum she's popping.

This is the Iterations assignment, a semester long project. In this project we were to design as if it were going to be a vinyl toy. We were given a theme, then given instruction and criticism on how to improve it, then we had to take the same base and re-vamp it to a new theme. Can I say that it was really a struggle to turn it into a Soviet theme? I remember that Joe, my teacher. would never tell us how to do it and gave me very little in the way of instruction, but because of that I really got to explore on my own and come up with my own ideas. It was quite the experience, really hard at first but very rewarding.

Snowbeast was a theme for a larger project, but here is the actualy Snowbeast design. I rather like him.

The assignment was vehicle. ... Not my strong suit, but I had fun drawing the animals.

Here the theme was something like "Place of Terror!" I decided to do my toilet as it had had a complete break down and back up previous to this assignment. I'm especially fond of the furry mold on the back of it.

Lastly, these are textures. The assignment was to find and draw 12 textures in pen. I'm a pretty proud of the broken glass and the turtle's neck, myself.

The Bristlecone Pine

I once had the pleasure to take Graphic Novel Appreciation (comic book class). It was so much fun and I really learned a lot about comics. This here is the beta comic that I did for the final.

A little background: We had to take two seemingly random ideas and combine them to make a story. My ideas were Time travel and A girl in a tree in the middle of a freeway divide. Combining those ideas I came up with a story about a tree whose spirit could wander away from itself, but the further the spirit goes the older it gets. If a spirit were to wander too far the tree would die. That's what I came up with, anyway. These are only the first few pages of the story, but that's all you get. Mwa haha!

Trunk Monkey Beat Boards

 These are the beat boards from a commercial storyboarding assignment. Basically a guy wrecks his car and so he calls on his trunk monkey (comes with the vehicle) to use its sexy wiles to get a trucker to pull over and give the poor guy a ride. Hah, the concept and everything I came up with as well as drew and colored.

If I could do it over I'd have made the 2nd board a split screen showing the guy pressing the button and the "monkey" getting out of the trunk carrying a dress. Then in the third board I'd actually show the trucker stopping after seeing the monkey's sexy leg.

You have to wonder though...what's wrong with the trucker's head?

Digital Painting Class Assignment - Working with Lineart

These were assignments for my Digital Painting class. The teacher, Sam Nielson, who is awesome, would give us lineart for this assignment and we'd have to make them appear 3 dimensional. The pictures have credit to their original designers, but I included pictures of the lineart, too.
The Barbarian I did back in 2010 and the model I did in...2011 I think.

I did these, too. It was just to get a feel for creating shape in a painting. Ta da.

Imaginary Friend

This was for a class assignment. The theme was My Imaginary Friend. For the actual assignment it was only to be shaded, not colored, but I decided to post the WIP colored version. I hope to be able to finish it soon. If you're wondering, my imaginary friend is a mix of my favorite animals, a cat, a horse and a bird. I had a name for it once, but I can't remember what that was. Something like Kittengriff...



Then for fun I also drew a TRex version. Basically I just drew the TRex then I photoshopped it over the kittengriff.

PS Yes, I painted the clouds myself. They're not cheated. :P

Digital Painting

I love painting digitally! I have taken the class here at BYU a couple of times and I loved it! Unfortunately I don't have as much time to dedicate to it as I would like but I try to keep it up. I wouldn't mind doing this for a living, actually. :D Anyway here are some examples of my work. We'll start with this charming little lady:

This is Peggy, a little mad scientist. The device upon which she is seated is the Candy Crane 2000 - the ultimate assistant in Trick-or-Treating technology.

As you can see I did a color palette test before I decided on the analogous scheme. I just can't get away from red headed characters it seems...

And just for fun this is the early version of Peggy, before she was even named Peggy and I just called her Inventor. Ah, it's so nostalgic seeing how they've grown up... or down, as the case may be.

Ninja Rig and Model

This is my Tiny Inner Ninja character. She has no hair yet or even her skirt, this is just the basic model. Someday I hope to give her hair and dynamic cloth.

I myself modeled, UV mapped, textured, rigged and animated her for my 3D Character Animation class.

Oh the humanity...

This was my first Computer animation.

First we were assigned to create a Lego man(tm) complete with shaders and UV maps, then animate him without a rig (which is fine because back then I didn't know what a rig was). So my little Inigo Montoya jumps through a hoop then pulls out a toy light saber.

When we were then asked to add effects to our animation I set the hoop on fire and attached lightning to the saber. It's all default effects and a relatively poor animation, but it makes me laugh.

A questionnaire...of DOOM!

1. Outside of school and your comics, have you written any fiction or non-fiction? Do you like to read prose fiction or non-fiction?

Yes indeed! Although I only have physically written complete stories when they were no more than ten pages long. Usually I write a bunch of prompts and outlines.

I prefer fictions. It's not that I wouldn't read non fiction, I just haven't found many interesting ones. Though I do like history.

2. Would you say you have a good awareness of the history of American comics?

Everything I know about American comics I learned from watching cartoons and watching a documentary. I'd say I am aware, but I couldn't name off all the facts or even give legitimate opinions. :P Hence taking this class.

3. Off the top of your head, could you name 5 artists who worked in comics before 1980? Do you have a favorite?

Uuuuuuuuuuuhhhh...Stan Lee? I don't know if he was an artist as well as writer.

4. Could you name 5 artists who work or worked in newspaper comics?

Charles Schulz - Peanuts, Dan Piraro - Bizarro, Bill Keane - Family Circus, ... That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

5. Could you name any contemporary cartoonists from Europe? Do you have a favorite?

Ah man, I could name some animators.

6. Could you name any contemporary manga artists from Japan? Do you have a favorite?

I think Ryoko Hikawa is still alive and working, though I could be wrong. She's my fave.

7. Do you read European comics?

I have not, but I will.

8. Do you read any manga?

I have, but not for a while. After the incredible disappointments of Fullmetal Alchemist, Fruits Basket and Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles the magic is beginning to wear thin. Too expensive a hobby to tolerate such lame endings. "And since the artist is too unimaginitive we through together a quick slap of an ending and they all got better, the end!" Booooring.

9. Do you regularly draw in a sketchbook or write in a journal?

Yes and Yes! I feel lost if I skip a few days.

10. Would you say you have a good working ability to drawing with brush and ink? If so, how long have you used a brush? What types?

I'm not too confident in my brush skills so I've been practicing with a brush pen filled with water and ink and I think I'm beginning to get the hang of it. Inking I love but am always looking for improving.

11. Which magazines or websites do you regularly read in order to get comics news?

None...

12. Which magazines or websites do you regularly read in order to get news of current events?

...none. I usually listen to the radio as I drive or get the news from my mom.

13. Do you go to comic book conventions or festivals? If so--which ones?

Comic-con! It's a tradition for my older brother, younger sister and I to go. Not this year though. :(

14. Have you ever sat through a portfolio review with a professional editor? If so, could you briefly sum up their message for you?

Well, not an editor. No.

15. Have you ever had your work published? If so, where?

I wish!

16. How long have you been drawing?

As long as I could hold a crayon, but only really learning about drawing since I cam to college a few years ago.

17. Do you like to go to museums? Do you have any favorite "fine" artists, either living or dead? Film directors?

Yes! Especially free ones. Actually, I'm a huge fan of Rockwell and Walter Raine. I also love this new artist I've discovered, but I'll have to get her name here another time.

18. Would you think it could be useful or beneficial to watch a film or films as a group and discuss it afterwards as it may relate to comics? Do you have a recommendation for such a film?

I think so because since we have to do it for a presentation I would like to see it done.

19. What ethnographic background do you have and how confident are you in acting as an expert of resource of that background?

I am white, very Irish, but I've lived mainly in northern Oregon and southern California - very different places.

20. What comic or book or movie have you read/seen at least 5 times? And 10 times?

I'm not too big on rereading generally, but I think I've read Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai quite a lot. They're quick reads and very entertaining. Movies, when I was younger I watched My Little Ponies, The Great Mouse Detective and Raggedy Anne and Andy's Musical Adventure all the time. I also love Darby O'Gill and the Little People. I could go on and on, but I want to stop.
